SYNOPSIS
Healthcare is increasingly driven by advanced medical technologies, but successful innovation requires more than developing sophisticated devices or systems. It requires a clear understanding of clinical needs, engineering design, safety, regulation, and real-world implementation.
This talk explores the evolving role of the Biomedical Engineer in bridging these critical areas. It follows the MedTech journey from clinical need and innovation through design, verification and validation, regulatory considerations, clinical adoption, and ultimately patient impact. The session will also highlight emerging technologies and the challenges of translating promising research and prototypes into solutions that can be safely and effectively implemented in healthcare.
Within the Malaysian MedTech ecosystem, biomedical engineers have an important role in connecting academia, healthcare, industry, and regulators. Ultimately, biomedical innovation should be measured not only by publications, patents, or prototypes, but by its ability to deliver meaningful clinical impact.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nashrul Fazli Bin Mohd Nasir
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nashrul Fazli Mohd Nasir is an Associate Professor and a Deputy Dean (Academic and Research) at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Malaysia from October 2024 until July 2026. He was also the Head of the Sports Engineering Research Centre (SERC), UniMAP previously.
A pioneer in Malaysia's biomedical engineering landscape, he was among the earliest cohort of Biomedical Engineering graduates from the University of Malaya before obtaining his MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Keele University, United Kingdom, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from RMIT University, Australia.
With over 20 years of academic and professional experience, his expertise spans biomedical engineering, medical devices, biomaterials, tissue engineering, healthcare technologies, and sports engineering. Beyond research, he actively contributes to professional engineering practice through leadership roles in the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), engineering accreditation activities, and Malaysia's medical device ecosystem. He is also an international keynote and plenary speaker, promoting stronger collaboration between academia, industry, regulators, and society.
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nashrul Fazli Mohd Nasir is an Associate Professor at the Biomedical Electronic Engineering Programme, Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Malaysia. He was also the Head of the Sports Engineering Research Centre (SERC), UniMAP. Widely recognised as one of the pioneering figures in biomedical engineering education in Malaysia, Dr. Nashrul was among the earliest cohort of Biomedical Engineering graduates from the University of Malaya. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Keele University, United Kingdom, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from RMIT University, Australia.
Since joining UniMAP in 2005, he has played a significant role in establishing and developing the Biomedical Electronic Engineering Programme, where he later became its first Programme Chairperson. Throughout his academic career, he has held various leadership positions, including Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni) and Deputy Dean (Academic and Research), contributing extensively to programme development, accreditation, quality assurance, and postgraduate education.
His research interests include biomedical engineering, medical devices, biomaterials, tissue engineering, BioMEMS, biosensors, biodegradable materials, healthcare technologies, and sports engineering. His work on hydroxyapatite-based biomaterials derived from Malaysian natural resources, particularly Mentarang shells, has received recognition through research, innovation, and media platforms.
Beyond academia, Dr. Nashrul actively contributes to professional engineering practice through The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), where he serves as the Chair of the Healthcare and Biomedical Working Group under the Electrical Engineering Technical Division (EETD). He also serves as an evaluator, external examiner, programme assessor, reviewer, and advisor for various engineering and engineering technology programmes in Malaysia.
An international keynote and plenary speaker, Dr. Nashrul is actively involved in Malaysia's medical device ecosystem through collaborations with regulators, industry partners, and professional bodies. Through his academic leadership, research excellence, professional service, and public engagement activities, he continues to bridge academia, industry, and society in advancing healthcare technology innovation and engineering education in Malaysia and beyond.
