SYNOPSIS

Buildings are among the largest consumers of energy and major contributors to carbon emissions. As Malaysia moves toward a low-carbon and net zero pathway, the building sector must transition from conventional energy consumption toward high-efficiency, renewable-powered, and climate-resilient assets.

This talk will introduce the concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) and explain how it can be applied in real building operations, especially for public, institutional, commercial, and industrial facilities. The session will cover the key principles of reducing energy demand, improving energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy such as rooftop solar PV, and using smart energy management systems to monitor and optimise building performance.

The talk will also highlight the importance of engineering design, energy audits, building energy modelling, lifecycle cost analysis, and financial viability in delivering NZEB projects. Practical challenges such as CAPEX constraints, retrofit limitations, operation and maintenance issues, user behaviour, and policy or regulatory alignment will also be discussed.

By the end of the session, participants will understand that net zero energy buildings are not only a sustainability aspiration, but also a practical pathway to reduce electricity costs, improve asset performance, support ESG targets, and contribute to Malaysia’s national energy transition agenda.
