SYNOPSIS   

As the world accelerates toward net-zero emissions, Malaysia stands at a critical energy crossroads. Historically rooted in its massive palm oil economy, the nation's biofuel sector is rapidly shifting from a price-stabilization mechanism for agriculture into a core pillar of the National Biofuel Policy and National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). This talk explores the current state, challenges, and immense opportunities within Malaysia’s biofuel landscape. We will dissect the current rollout of higher biodiesel mandates, tackle the logistical and economic hurdles of upgrading national infrastructure, and look beyond the road to the frontier of next generation fuels—specifically Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Attendees will gain a clear-eyed perspective on how Malaysia balances its domestic energy security, global export dynamics, and environmental mandates to fuel a low-carbon future.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Ts. Dr. SANG YEW NGIN

Ir. Ts. Dr. Sang Yew Ngin has more than 29 years of technical and leadership roles in private and public sector. He is currently the Undersecretary, Biomass and Biofuel Division, Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) the position he has held since June 2019. He is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) and Professional Technologist (P.Tech) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Malaysian Board of Technology (MBOT) in addition to being the Exco for PSESIG, Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) since 2015 until now.

Ir. Ts. Dr. Sang is also currently serving as a Board Member for National Biosafety Board (NBB). Occasionally, he also being invited as a speaker in various seminars and conferences covering the biomass and biofuel domain and serves as manuscript reviewer with Journal of Cleaner Production and Energy Policy.

He was previously working in private sectors in the Palm Oil Milling and Industrial Water & Wastewater Treatment. He also has knowledge and expertise in the public policies and administration domain due to his experience and has previously serves in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA).
