INTRODUCTION:

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia – Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division (IEM GETD) is pleased to organize a 2-in-1 combo technical talk & visit to an accredited geotechnical testing laboratory, providing participants with both theoretical understanding and hands-on exposure to soil and rock testing facilities, equipment.

This programme aims to enhance participants’ understanding of laboratory testing methods, interpretation of results, and their applications in geotechnical design and construction.


OBJECTIVE:

•   Access to technical talk, geotechnical laboratory facilities and testing activities
•   Familiarization with soil and rock test equipment and systems
•   Briefing on soil and rock test methods and engineering applications
•   Exposure to different types of soil and rock specimens


Testing Highlights

•   Soil classification and index properties
•   Strength, compressibility, permeability, and dispersibility tests
•   Compaction and CBR testing
•   Soil resistivity testing (Wenner method)
•   Rock compressive strength and point load index testing (ASTM standards)


TECHNICAL TALK SYNOPSIS

Understanding the behaviour of soil and rock is fundamental to safe and effective geotechnical design. This technical talk introduces the role of geotechnical laboratory testing in determining key engineering properties of soils and rocks, including strength, compressibility, permeability, and classification characteristics. Participants will gain insights into common laboratory test methods, the interpretation of test results, and their practical applications in geotechnical engineering practice. The session also serves as an introduction to the subsequent laboratory visit hosted by Soilpro Technical Services Sdn Bhd, where participants will observe selected testing equipment and procedures used in accredited geotechnical laboratories.


  SPEAKER’S PROFILE

Dr. Wong Kim Yuen, Principal Partner and Managing Director of Soilpro Technical Services Sdn Bhd, holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of South Australia. He has 42 years of experience in site investigation and geotechnical laboratory tests and leads Soilpro's Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia, SAMM MS ISO/IEC 17025 lab quality management system and is an authorised signatory for soil test reports. He is a past President of the Malaysian Site Investigators Association (MSIA) and serves on the Technical Commitee on Geotechnical Works (TC/D/17) for the ISC/D managed by Department of Standards Malaysia. He is a trained CIDB assessor for Site Investigation program organised by CIDB, and has contributed in developing National Occupational Skills Standards and training modules for site investigation personnel. His expertise is on maintaining continuous improvement with the SAMM MS ISO/IEC 17025 framework.
