SYNOPSIS
Airside collisions remain one of the most underestimated risks in airport operations. This talk highlights the hidden threats on runways and aprons including miscommunication, limited visibility, vehicle movement control and controller workload. Through real-world case studies, we will examine how gaps in coordination and surveillance can escalate into ground-level disasters. The session explores the role of Crisis Management Centres in enhancing early warning systems, enforcing airside safety protocols and integrating ground radar technologies. It aims to provide airport authorities, engineers and emergency planners with practical insights to strengthen crisis preparedness and prevent high-impact incidents that originate on the ground.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Dr. Ricky Liew Chee Leong is a Licensed Aircraft Engineer and the current Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Technical Division, IEM. With over 36 years of experience in aircraft maintenance and regulatory compliance, he has held key positions including Accountable Manager of a Part 145 AMO and formerly served as Quality Assurance and Safety Manager. Ir. Dr. Ricky Liew has led multiple airport-based aircraft recovery operations following incidents and brings experiences in airside safety, operational risk and crisis response. His work bridges engineering practice with strategic disaster preparedness.
