Background

In July 1994, an International Conference cum Exhibition on Trenchless Construction – Towards Trenchless Cities was organised by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). The conference was held in Seremban in the State of Negeri Sembilan. In February 2000, a Seminar on “Design, Construction, Operation and other Aspects of Tunnels” was again organised by the IEM in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The Tunnelling and Underground Space Technical Division (TUSTD) of the IEM was officially formed at the seminar with the objective ‘to undertake activities related to the promotion and advancement of the science and engineering of tunnels and underground space technologies’.

In line with the TUSTD’s objectives, the following past conferences were organised with great success:

i.    International Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space 2006
      (ICETUS2006)
ii.    International Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space 2011
      (ICETUS2011)
iii.   International Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space 2015
      (ICETUS2015)
iv.   Southeast Asian Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space 2017
      (SEACETUS2017)
v.    CCES-IEM Joint Southeast Asia Symposium & Exhibition on The Challenges and Strategic
Solutions of High Projects on Tunnels 2018 (SEASET2018)
vi.   ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress 2020 (WTC2020)
vii.  Inaugural Symposium of Young Tunnellers of Asia 2020 (SYTA2020)
viii.  Asian Conference on Tunnelling and Trenchless Technology 2023 (ACTT2023)
ix.   Southeast Asian Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space 2024
      (SEACETUS2024)

This event is proposed as a continuation of the ACTT edition, with the intention of hosting it every two years.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of organising the Asian Conference on Tunnelling and Trenchless Technology 2025 (ACTT2025) is to continue the tradition of promoting knowledge exchange, innovation, and technological advancements in tunnelling and trenchless construction across Asia. The conference aims to bring together professionals, academics, industry leaders, and stakeholders from various sectors to discuss challenges, share experiences, and foster collaboration. It will provide a platform for showcasing cutting- edge research, technology, and solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of underground space.

Additionally, ACTT2025 seeks to achieve the following objectives:

a. Enhance professional development by offering technical sessions, workshops, and discussions
    on tunnelling and trenchless technology.
b. Encourage young engineers and students to participate actively through competitions and special
sessions designed to highlight emerging talents.
c. Strengthen the regional network of tunnelling professionals and foster collaboration between
    organisations, industries, and academic institutions.
d. Create opportunities for technical visits to significant tunnelling and trenchless projects, allowing
participants to gain practical insights into ongoing or completed works in Malaysia.

Concurrent Events

• Ir. Dr Ooi Teik Aun Memorial Lecture
This lecture will be held to honor the contributions of the late Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun to the local and international tunnelling and engineering community. It will feature a distinguished speaker who has made significant contributions to the field of tunnelling and underground space engineering.

• Young Engineer & Student Technical Paper Competition
This competition aims to encourage young engineers and students to present their research and innovations in tunnelling and trenchless technology. It will provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work and gain recognition. The Best Technical Paper (OTA Award) and Best Presenter Award will be announced during the conference dinner. This event will be co-organised with Young Engineer Section (YES) of IEM.

• Post-Conference Workshop
A post-conference workshop will be organised to offer in-depth training on specific topics related to tunnelling and trenchless technology. The workshop will be conducted by industry experts (mostly from the invited speakers) and cater to professionals looking to enhance their technical skills.

Summary

In summary, the proposal for the Asian Conference on Tunnelling and Trenchless Technology 2025 (ACTT2025) presents a unique opportunity to advance knowledge and innovation within the tunnelling and trenchless industries. By bringing together industry leaders, experts, and emerging talents, this conference aims to foster collaboration and the sharing of cutting-edge research and practices. The inclusion of a dedicated competition of young engineers and students underscores our commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals, providing them with a platform to showcase their work, and rewarding excellence through the Best Technical Award (OTA Award) and Best Presenter Award.

The conference’s focus on current trends, technological advancements, and the integration of sustainable practices in tunnelling and trenchless technology positions it as a pivotal event for driving industry growth and addressing the challenges we face in urban infrastructure development.

We are confident that ACTT2025 will not only enhance the visibility of the field but also establish lasting connections among participants, fostering a spirit of innovation and collaboration.

Technical Visit (Day 3 - 12 September 2025)

As part of the ACTT 2025, a technical visit will be organised to provide participants with practical insights into ongoing tunnelling and underground construction projects in Malaysia. The visit aims to highlight cutting-edge construction techniques, project management practices, and engineering challenges faced in large- scale infrastructure projects.

Proposed sites for technical visit are:

•   Site 1: East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Project

The ECRL is a landmark infrastructure project that will significantly enhance connectivity across east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It involves the construction of numerous tunnels (both NATM and TBM tunnels) along its 665 km route, presenting unique challenges in geotechnical engineering, tunnelling, and trenchless technology.

•   Site 2: Potential LLM Tunnelling Site (to be identified)

The technical visit will be held on the third day following the conference. Participants will be transported to the site via organised shuttle buses from the conference venue. All necessary safety equipment, including helmets, safety vests, and boots, will be provided. A detailed briefing will precede the site visit, outlining safety procedures and providing background information on the selected project.
