SYNOPSIS
A Task Force to prepare a guideline on dengue prevention and control was formed in 2020 under the Chairmanship of Dato’ Ir. Dr. Lim Chow Hock. An invitation was extended to all the Branches and some relevant Technical Divisions to join the Task Force to prepare the IEM Guideline on the Prevention and Control of Dengue from the engineering perspective. The objective is to assist the government's efforts to combat the dengue menace. The first edition was published in April 2022. Since then, the Task Force has been promoting the guideline to many government agencies and within IEM, more than 6 talks via the virtual platform had been conducted. Furthermore, BSTD further championed the awareness through the IEM bulletin with a feature article on Dengue in June 2022.
The Dengue Task Force received feedback during their presentations to the government departments and local authorities to translate the guideline to Bahasa Malaysia, and this task was taken up and the translation was completed in May 2025.
IEM would continue its efforts to support the noble deed of eliminating dengue incidents using the available resources. In this respect, IEM Library has purchased an eBook entitled “Mosquitoes and Their Control” which has 459 pages, for all members. You can download the book and learn the knowledge; however, one must put the knowledge learned into practice in their design.
IEM has also decided to make available via this link so that the guidebook in English and Bahasa Malaysia can be downloaded, for the greater benefit of IEM members. Link https://www.myiem.org.my/content/iem_guidelines-1004.aspx
This technical talk will cover the salient points extracted from the eBook and the IEM guideline on the preventionand control of Aedes mosquitoes breeding grounds.
Before embarking on this awareness programme, one must ask if your own house has the prevention and controls put in place to eliminate Aedes mosquitoes' breeding grounds? If the answer is affirmative, then you have started the journey to bring down the number of dengue cases in the country.
