SYNOPSIS

The Malaysian construction industry plays an important role in the impact of the Malaysian economy. However, the implementation of safety and health in construction projects has many work-related accidents and incidents. Construction works and activities have faced opportunities for accidents to occur. Therefore, it needs to have a safety and health assessment and certification.

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia has initiated the introduction of the Safety and Health Assessment System in Construction (SHASSIC) with the main objective of assessing and evaluating the performance of safety and health in construction projects. It is an independent method to assess and evaluate the safety and health performance of contractors in construction works/projects.

The assessment can be divided into three components - document review, work site inspection and employee interview. These assessments are mostly fragmented in measuring effective safety management and implementation on construction sites. It also believes the SHASSIC assessment acts as a measurement tool for safety and health towards improving site performance and proactively continuous improvement of site conditions.
