SYNOPSIS

Malaysian appetite for energy consumption increases every year. In 1996, the total energy used was around 20,000 ktoe. 20 years later, in 2016, the figure had risen to more than 57,000 ktoe.  (Source : Malaysia Energy Statistic 2018). On average the growth of energy consumption is in line with the country GDP growth of 5.7%.  In 2017, 40% of electricity generation comes from petroleum based with another 42.5% comes from coal.  Oil prices on the other hand were as low as USD40/barrel in 2016 but has recorded as high as US109/barrel in 2012.  Balancing the cost of generating electricity and transferring the cost to consumer is not easy. The government has various issues to consider before increasing the electricity tariff.  According to The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) in February 2018, Malaysia was the fourth lowest domestic electricity tariff in the world after Sweden, China and Taiwan.

Rather than just floating the energy price according to the fuel cost, the consumers have to be educated to change the way they consume energy. Government agency such as Malaysia Green Technology Corporation has trained more than 1500 energy managers to support the requirements of Registered Electrical Energy Manager (REEM) under Efficient Management of Electrical Energy Regulation 2008 since 2010. The REEM has the duty to report to Energy Commission on the energy management program under their care every six month. Many installations just do the regulatory compliance requirements. However, some institutions have adopted the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) as the management tools to embed energy efficiency culture in the organization.

In 2019, EMGS program has shown RM41.8 energy cost savings for the year 2019.  Two institutions have shown that energy management is just not about saving energy but also about instilling efficiency culture to their staff. IJN and Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-Kanak Likas were awarded the prestigious 3 Star EMGS certificates that showed that they have embedded the energy efficiency in the organization culture and showed continuous improvement in terms of energy efficiency performance for the past six years.

The speaker is a Professional Energy Manager and the Chief Assessor for the EMGS certification. He shall share the experience in developing a successful sustainable energy management program, the challenges in implementation of the program and the need to continuously develop the skilled and mindset to ensure that the efficiency culture is part of organization core structures. Energy professionals can share their experiences during the session.
