SYNOPSIS

The fundamental challenge in offshore pipeline installation is not simply how to place a pipeline on the seabed. It is important to ensure that the pipeline is safely, correctly and reliably installed and remains fit for its intended design life of 20–30 years.

Offshore pipeline installation is one of the critical stages in pipeline discipline which touches many aspects. It begins with understanding the pipeline design, route and seabed conditions and continues through fabrication, transportation, installation, welding, inspection, surveying, pre-commissioning and commissioning.

A problem in one area can affect another. For example, incomplete knowledge of the seabed may affect how the pipeline is installed. This can lead to unexpected movement or damage which may not always be immediately visible. If such issues are not identified and addressed, they can potentially become long-term safety, integrity, operational or financial concerns to the Operator.

The challenge is therefore not only to complete the installation according to schedule. Most importantly, it is to have confidence that the pipeline has been installed in the right condition, at the right location and with an acceptable level of technical assurance.

This sharing session will explore the key aspects of offshore pipeline installation, including where things can go wrong, why they can go wrong, the potential consequences and how these risks can be identified and managed throughout the installation process.

The details and practical considerations will be presented and discussed during the sharing session.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Tengku Mohd Shahru Haslan bin Tuan Yusoff
(Ir. Tengku Shahru)

Ir. Tengku Shahru is a Professional Engineer and Pipeline Specialist with more than 17 years of extensive experience in the delivery of onshore and offshore oil and gas pipeline projects across Malaysia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. His experience covers the full project development and execution cycle, with particular emphasis on pipeline engineering, construction, installation and EPCC/EPCIC projects.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in major pipeline projects from FEED and detailed engineering, from proof of concept to construction and project execution, providing technical leadership to ensure that pipeline systems are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with project technical requirements. He previously spent 13 years with PETRONAS as a Pipeline Engineer, including managing five concurrent EPCC projects in Iraq, demonstrating strong capability in coordinating multidisciplinary engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activities.

His technical expertise includes onshore and offshore pipeline design, pipeline construction and installation, non-metallic and flexible pipeline systems,
pipeline integrity, risk management and emergency pipeline repair. He has also contributed to CAPEX optimisation, cost mitigation, contract management and technical advisory services, with experience leading project packages valued at more than USD 25 million.

A notable career achievement was his involvement in delivering Southeast Asia’s first offshore non-metallic pipeline pilot project, demonstrating his capability in applying innovative pipeline technologies to challenging offshore applications. His combination of engineering expertise and practical project execution experience provides a strong understanding of the technical, construction and commercial considerations required to successfully deliver pipeline infrastructure in the oil and gas industry.
