SYNOPSIS
The rapid growth of Asia’s offshore wind industry, expected to surpass 215 GW by 2034, is reshaping the role of Malaysian geoscientists. As the region transitions from traditional hydrocarbon exploration to renewable energy, demand for subsea site characterization and geohazard assessment has intensified. This shift is not a replacement of existing expertise but a strategic re-skilling, where core competencies such as seismic interpretation, borehole logging, and sedimentology are applied to new engineering challenges. These include ensuring foundation integrity for offshore structures, mitigating geohazards like shallow gas and seabed instability, and advancing floating offshore wind technologies in deeper waters. Drawing on strong experience from the Oil and Gas sector, Malaysian geoscientists are well positioned to support complex offshore developments. This transformation also positions Malaysia as a regional talent hub, providing geophysical expertise and consultancy services to emerging offshore wind markets in countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
