Have you ever had the fantasy of wanting to be Indiana Jones or Lara Croft the Tomb Raider? If the sight of ancient and forgotten dams found deep inside the jungle will intrigue you, this hike-of-a-lifetime to the forests of Tokun Hill and Bukit Seraya will give you the fascinating feeling of embarking on an archaeological adventure.
Cherok Tokun Nature Park is located within the National Forest in Bukit Mertajam (BM) and at the foot of Tokun Hill, and Cherok Tokun is the starting point of the Tokun Hill hiking trail. You can choose between hiking up Tokun Hill by the tar road which leads to the Telekom Tower or tracking up the hill by the jungle trails. But a Tomb Raider will definitely choose the jungle tracks that lead to the ancient abandoned dam hidden deep inside the forest, which is obviously the more challenging and exciting option.
You can find in the BM National Forest some old and historical concrete dam structures dating back to the British colonial era in the late 19th century and early 20th century which had been abandoned and were no longer in use. There is one located just at the base of the hill at Cherok Tokun and another two hidden deep inside the forests of Tokun Hill and Bukit Seraya. From historical records, the Cherok Tokun Dam was built by the British in 1939, whereas the Bukit Seraya Dam was built 337 metres above sea level by the Federated Malay States Railways in 1926.
Along the hike, you will also have the opportunity to see the largest tree in Penang found in the midst of the jungle, as well as many other attractions and elements of interest such as the Mushroom Rock, the Bonsai Tree, the Octopus Tree, and the Angkor Wat Tree. So, are you ready to be a Tomb Raider? Come and let’s take on the adventure.
