SYNOPSIS

Rapid urban intensification and transit-oriented development have increased construction adjacent to operational railway corridors, introducing significant geotechnical, structural and operational risks. Railway Protection Zones (RPZ) function as critical engineering control mechanisms to safeguard track geometry, signalling integrity and service reliability. This lecture examines RPZ from an integrated transportation engineering perspective, covering setback controls, settlement and vibration limits, clearance envelopes, and construction interactions with railway assets. It outlines regulatory approval processes, professional responsibilities and liability exposure. Drawing on Malaysian urban rail case experience, the session highlights risk identification, monitoring regimes, trigger action planning and stakeholder coordination to ensure safe, resilient railway operations
