SYNOPSIS
The implementation of the OKU Inclusion Policy in Malaysian public universities calls for innovative strategies to promote meaningful social participation among students with learning disabilities (LD). This presentation introduces the Social Participation for Enrichment and Education Development (SPEED) Model, designed to address the critical elements of relationships, acceptance, perspectives, and interactions within the university ecosystem.
The SPEED Model emphasizes fostering positive relationships between students with LD and their peers, enhancing their sense of acceptance and belonging within academic and social environments. It incorporates a holistic approach to understanding the unique perspectives of students with LD, focusing on their lived experiences, aspirations, and challenges in navigating university life. Furthermore, the model provides actionable strategies for faculty members to create inclusive classroom practices, equitable opportunities, and supportive interactions that align with the OKU Inclusion Policy.
Key findings from pilot studies conducted in public universities will be shared, highlighting the role of structured interventions in improving peer relationships, promoting faculty-student rapport, and facilitating a culture of inclusion. The presentation will also discuss the broader implications of the SPEED Model in shaping institutional policies, training programs, and support systems for students with disabilities. This session aims to provide educators, policymakers, and stakeholders with practical insights and tools to enhance the educational experiences of undergraduate students with LD, fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
