Course Overview
This course is designed to strengthen your understanding of the following areas:
• Principles of safety and protection; standards and the law, status of design codes and regulations. • Scope and objectives of the design standards. • The Malaysian Electricity Act and Electricity Regulations, the role of the Energy Commission. • Electrical supply and distribution • The grid system, 3-phase distribution, supply voltage levels • Tariffs, distribution transformers, switch gears, transformer loading, short circuit calculation, fault level. • Three-phase circuits, power factor, voltage distortion. • Harmonics, unbalanced 3-phase load, single-phase and 3-phase motors, motor starters, speed control, thyristors and triacs, lighting control, variable frequency supplies.
Course Format
The course consists of classroom presentations. Participants are encouraged to actively engage in discussions.
Biodata of Facilitators
Ir. Prof. Dr Lim Yun Seng pursued his undergraduate studies in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, in 1998. Subsequently, Lim pursued his PhD at UMIST in the area of power system from September 1998 to September 2001.
In 2002, he worked as a postdoctoral research assistant at UMIST in the area of renewable energy. Over the past 9 years, Ir. Dr Lim has secured 11 external research grants from The Ministry of Green Technology, Water and Communication, The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation as well as The Ministry of Higher Education for the research projects on smart grid and renewable energy. The total amount of research grants received so far is RM 4.33 million or USD 1.23 million.
Ir. Dr Lim has published 24 international journals with the total citations of 300 at h-index of 8. He has filed 4 patents on his inventions. One of the patents is filed with the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office. Of all his 12 postgraduate students, Ir. Dr Lim has successfully graduated 7 postgraduate students so far.
