BACKGROUND

Rahman Hydraulic Tin (RHT), located in Pengkalan Hulu, Perak is one of the oldest and largest open-pit tin mines in Malaysia. With a legacy that stretches back to the early 20th century, the mine has played a pivotal role in Malaysia’s tin industry. Originally developed during the British colonial era, the operation has undergone several phases of transformation, from traditional placer mining to modern mechanized open-cast methods. The mine has since been modernized with the incorporation of advanced mineral processing technologies, environmental safeguards, and sustainable operational practices, making it a model for responsible mining in Malaysia.

The site is rich in cassiterite—the primary ore of tin—and is located in the Central Belt tin-bearing zone of Peninsular Malaysia, a region historically renowned for its tin wealth. The orebody is hosted in a granite-associated system, and the mine utilizes conventional drilling and blasting techniques, followed by truck and shovel operations to extract and transport ore. The processing plant features a combination of gravity separation and flotation processes to recover tin concentrate.

In line with environmental and social governance (ESG) principles, RHT has implemented tailings management systems, water recycling, and rehabilitation efforts to minimize the environmental footprint. The mine also engages with local communities through employment opportunities, education programs, and infrastructure development, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of Pengkalan Hulu and surrounding areas.

RHT’s strategic importance lies not only in its contribution to Malaysia’s mineral production but also in its demonstration of how historical mines can be revitalized to meet modern demands. As global attention on responsible sourcing and sustainable mining intensifies, Rahman Hydraulic Tin stands as a benchmark for legacy mining operations adapting to contemporary standards of environmental stewardship and community engagement.
