SYNOPSIS

Many SME operators have a misconception that R&D is only meant for large or international companies, and they always confuse it with product development. In reality, with rapidly changing technology landscape, SMEs need to place greater emphasise in R&D, as well as innovation in product development. In recent years, the government has actively supporting SMEs to strengthen their engagement in this area. With the experience of pioneering and starting R&D department in 2 different companies, Dr Chin can share his practical insights with SMEs on ‘how to get started’ and ‘how to run R&D effectively’.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Assoc. Prof. Dr. JITKAI CHIN

Dr JK Chin earned his BEng and PhD from Department of Chemical and Process Engineering from University of Sheffield in 2001 and 2007 respectively. He started his academic career in University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, starting his research group in the university focusing on microfluidic, droplet liquid interactions, propellant development and zirconia-based composites.

In 2020, Dr Chin joined Filtermation (Mfg) Sdn Bhd to oversee the new R&D department and product development. In 2023, Dr Chin joined Novaco-Resources Sdn Bhd, a newly established company in Klang to oversee R&D, engineering and QAQC operation. These two companies specialize in manufacturing of HVAC components. In November 2024, he returned to academic as Associate Professor in Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
