SYNOPSIS
Malaysia faces persistent road safety issues, particularly involving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), which account for over 80% of road fatalities and cost up to 3% of GDP. Causes include incompetency, negligence, and mechanical failures, similar to past aviation accidents.
Aviation, however, has drastically reduced accident rates through safety management systems (SMS) and strict airworthiness requirements. By adopting aviation’s SMS approach hazard identification, risk management, and competency training road, rail, and marine transport could achieve significant safety improvements at relatively low cost through technology adoption.

Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Abu Hanifah Haji Abdullah
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Abu Hanifah Haji Abdullah, currently serving as an Associate Professor at UniKL MIAT since 2009, is a highly experienced aeronautical engineering expert with over 30 years in academia, industry, and regulatory roles. He previously served as an Airworthiness Inspector at the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and held engineering positions in Australia and Malaysia.
His expertise spans leadership, management, aircraft certification, accident investigation, aerospace design, R&D, training, and quality assurance. Actively engaged in projects with Airbus, Boeing, and passenger drone initiatives, he has contributed significantly to Malaysia’s aviation education, regulation, and innovation.
