SYNOPSIS

This innovative ultra-lightweight foam floating concrete (ULWFFC) utilizes renewable modified oil palmshell (OPS) as a bio-based lightweight aggregate and recycled solid polyurethane foam (SPUF) as a cavity filler. The study evaluates the strength and functional properties of ULWFFC by testing varying proportions of bio-based OPS and recycled SPUF aggregates. Targeting a density range of 500–800kg/m³ and compressive strength exceeding 4.0 MPa, the material aligns with 3R principles (recycled, reusable, renewable) and meets RoHS standards, offering an eco-friendly and sustainable solution. The cost-effective production process, combined with superior functional properties—such as thermal insulation, fire resistance, soundproofing, and buoyancy—positions ULWFFC as a versatile material for applications in construction, aquaculture, coastal infrastructure, floating solar farms, and offshoremarine projects. Incorporating lightweight polypropylene fibers further enhances ULWFFC’s tensile strength and functional performance, making it a compelling choice for advanced engineering challenges.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Yew Ming Kun

Dr. Yew Ming Kun obtained his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Malaya in 2015 and currently serves as an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia. He has mentored numerous postgraduate students, guiding them in various projects that have resulted in award-winning innovations, patents, and advancements in "Green & Sustainable Building Materials". As a Principal Investigator (P.I.) and Co-Principal Investigator, he has secured ten (10) intellectual property rights, both nationally and internationally. His accolades include multiple Gold Medals at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in 2011, 2019, 2020, and 2022, as well as a Gold Medal at the iENA 2012 in Germany. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he received the Best Green Technology Award from the Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA) in 2022. Dr. Yew has published over 100 technical papers and books, primarily focusing on sustainable construction materials and fire protective coatings, emphasizing sustainability. He holds a prominent role as Lead Guest Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member for more than ten (10) scientific journals and has served as an invited reviewer for over 20 SCI journals. His exceptional work has been recognized with the 2023 Outstanding Editor Award and the Most Innovative Excellence Award in both 2020 and 2023. Furthermore, he engages in consultancy and industry-academia partnership projects, collaborating with government entities and private enterprises within UPUM-UM and UTAR-DCC to develop (1) High-Performance Concrete (HPC), (2) Ultra-Lightweight Foamed Floating Concrete (ULWFFC), (3) Fire Protection Materials and etc. His consultancy portfolio encompasses the design and development of projects related to Green & Energy Sustainability and Smart Communities. Notable projects include "ECO Green Ultra-Lightweight Floating Concrete" as a pioneer in Malaysia designed to meet diverse needs in the construction and aquaculture sectors and others.
