Synopsis

Testing and Commissioning of Fire Protection System

The development and publication of IEM guideline on T&C of fire protection systems were the efforts of the Fire Advisory Board of IEM. The guideline was published in 2021. The guideline provides a useful guidance for systematic execution and coordination of the testing and commissioning process and activities.

The presentation will explain the concept, objectives, and scope of the guideline. It will cover the key features in the T&C guideline approach and process complete with T&C flowcharts, examples of fire operation matrices and T&C checklist and recording formats, which are intended to guide the T&C activities. The benefits of T&C documentation and the guideline will be highlighted.

Flood Abatement Equipment – Engineering Guide of Designation, Testing and Documentation

‘A chain is only as strong as its weakest link’. The same can applied to flood prevention and mitigation. In any building, the engineered flood prevention could have limitation and other challenges. This is because a building would have openings for people, vehicles, and utilities.

Certified flood abatement equipment will provide assurance to any potential users or specifiers offlood protection products that these have been tested and verified to a certain standard. This session will present the IEM Guideline on Flood Abatement Equipment - Engineering Guide of Designation, Testing and Documentation.

The Prevention and Control of Dengue

This Guideline is prepared as a technical reference and planning tool for mosquito breeding prevention and control from various engineering perspectives. It is intended to assist engineers, consultants, developers, contractors, site supervisors and inspectors, local authorities, government agencies, academicians, and other interested parties in ensuring that all types of buildings and engineering infrastructure are free from Aedes breeding grounds.

The Guideline is arranged and structured to highlight the planning and design considerations as well as the operational and maintenance requirements in all specific topics such as land use planning, stormwater management and associated systems, water supply, sewerage, buildings and mechanical system (within building), construction sites and waste management.

Considerable attention is given to construction sites in this Guideline as construction sites are a major source of dengue transmission. Finally, the Guideline ends with recommendations related to housekeeping and the contribution of engineers from the social perspective as ultimately it is the responsible human behaviour that will ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of any good engineering practices towards the prevention and control of dengue.
