Safe and Secure Environment for Women in Engineering

In celebration of the amazing women working in engineering industry and remarkable contributions made by women engineers in supporting lives for a better future.

Objectives;
•  Develop interest and enthusiasm for girls into engineering careers
•  Into building a safe and brighter future for women in engineering
•  Encourage growth of women in engineering professions
•  Inspire women in engineering to #MakeSafetySeen and contribute in building the nation


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

1. Ir. Dr. Jegalakshimi

Ir. Dr. Jegalakshimi Jewaratnam is a senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering Department , University Malaya. At present, she is also the coordinator for Masters of Safety, Health and Environment Engineering.She received her BEng (Chemical) and MEngSc (Chemical) from University Malaya in year 2003 and 2007 respectively. She completed her PhD (Chemical Engineering) in Newcastle University, United Kingdom in year 2013. She is a Professional Engineer registered in Board of Engineers Malaysia (2019) and a Chartered Engineer registered in Engineering Council, UK (2018). She is a Member of Institution of Engineers Malaysia (MIEM) (2019) and Institute of Chemical Engineering Malaysia (MIChemE) (2018). Prior to academic position, she has worked in the water industry as a technical and project engineer.In her academic career span, she has published academic journals and conference papers, engaged in industrial consultations and presented invited talks. Her research interests are advanced process control and optimization in bio processes, waste recovery and management;environment health and quantitative risk assessment.


2. Ir. Ts. Dr. Salmaliza

A Civil Engineering Lecturer at the University of Greenwich, Medway Campus. She received her PhD in Engineering from University of Malaya in October 2018 and MSc in Project Management from National University of Singapore in 2007. She is also a Professional Engineer (PE19028 since 05/07/2018), a Corporate Member of IEM (M23130 since 21/04/2018), Professional Technologist (PT20090036 since 10/09/2020)and ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE-05768/MY since 27/09/2022).The project she directly involved when she was the Lead Civil and Structural Engineer in MTC Engineering Consultancy Sdn. Bhd.is the ‘National Registration Record Centre Construction project' (PRPN), which started in May 2019. The client was the Public Work Department (JKR), and the user of the building will be Ministry of the Home Affair,Malaysia.


3. Ms. Nik Nurul Kamila

As a Program and Marketing Specialist at Penang Science Cluster, Ms. Nik leads impactful programs that ignite girls' interest in STEM and develop their leadership skills. Additionally, she provides coaching to professional women,equipping them to effectively mentor young girls and teach them STEM subjects. Her goal is to foster a supportive environment that encourages girls to pursue rewarding careers in STEM while empowering women to serve as role models and mentors.


Special Guest Speaker

Ms. Yin Wei Chong

As the Head of Solutions Mapping under Accelerator Lab Malaysia, Yin Wei identifies issues and solutions from the grassroots, test and grow them into policy recommendations and formalized products for the benefit of wider community.Among the solutions she has piloted under Accelerator Lab includes rural e-commerce and green technology in Sabah, behavioral insight experiment using animation and gamification for environmental action, and participatory design for parks in river conservation. She also works in enhancing the innovation ecosystem in tackling social development issues in Malaysia through impact measurement and management and innovative financing with partners such as Ministry of Economics, Islamic Development Bank, and National Technology and Innovation Sandboxes.

Together with her team, Yin Wei works closely with programme colleagues in designing new projects with relevant innovation methodologies in areas of digitalisation, energy transition and climate resilience with public and private sector partners. She currently serves as the Digital Advocate Network representative, and Portfolio and Pipeline Project Development task force member in Malaysia country office.

Prior to UNDP Accelerator Lab, Yin Wei worked with the Ministry of Education Malaysia - Education Performance and Delivery Unit on narrowing the equity gap through the District Transformation Programme. In her four years as field monitoring and evaluation officer in UNHCR Malaysia, she pioneered the tertiary education access program for refugee youth and worked closely with them in tackling community issues through youth initiatives. She holds a MSc in Rehabilitation Psychology and Bsc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and Management Studies from the University of Nottingham.
