SYNOPSIS

Dengue is a disease endemic in over 100 countries and Malaysia is also prone to this disease over the years. The dengue cases in Malaysia are among the  highest within the Western Pacific region as reported by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020. Dengue disease is a vector-borne disease that carries mainly by the female mosquito of the species Aedes aegypti. As of today, there is no effective or world-recognized vaccine to fully tackle this endemic except prevent and control the breed of the Aedes mosquito to stop the disease from being transmitted. Therefore, it is crucial to fight against dengue disease by preventing the breed or spread of Aedes mosquito in areas with human activity.

In the year 2021, an IEM dengue task force team was formed with a joint effort from members of multidisciplinary engineering backgrounds under the leadership of past IEM President Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock in instrumenting The Prevention and Control of Dengue guideline that aims to provide essential aspects of planning, design, construction, management, operation, and maintenance of buildings/infrastructure to control and prevent the breed of Aedes mosquito.

This technical talk covers the salient points of mosquito control measures via chemical and biological methods and further elaborates into the step-by-step procedures to put that knowledge into use.

Ir. Ts. Vincent Khaw Wei Chuan

Ir. Ts. Vincent Khaw Wei Chuen is currently an Asia Productivity and Process Specialist for Air Products. He has been in the chemical process industry for the past 7 years, working across engineering, operation, and technical functions. Ir. Ts. Vincent is a Professional Engineer (Chemical) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), a Professional Technologist (Chemical) registered with the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT), a Certified Environmental Professional in Scrubber Operation (CePSO), and certified Lean Six Sigma (LSS) coach. He also served as Secretary in IEM Chemical Engineering Technical Division (CETD) & IEM Dengue Task Force Team.
