SYNOPSIS
The hilly terrain, prolonged heavy rainstorms and dense hillside development has made Hong Kong prone to landslides. Following a number of disastrous landslides in the early 1970s, the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) has endeavoured to tackle the landslide problems in Hong Kong so as to safeguard the public since it was established in 1977. A Slope Safety System has been gradually developed to provide a comprehensive framework by implementing various landslide risk management strategies in a systematic manner. Through the multi-pronged strategies, landslide risk nowadays in Hong Kong has been substantially reduced when compared to that in the 1970s. This technical talk will walk through the Hong Kong’s slope safety journey and in particular, initiatives for enhancing community’s resilience against landslide disasters will also be highlighted.
