SYNOPSIS
Fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas and coal, supply 85 percent of the world’s energy needs. Unfortunately, they are the main source of carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming and climate change. Energy transition refers to the move by the global energy sector away from fossil fuels towards low carbon, renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, bioenergy and hydropower.
The global energy transition drive which accelerated over the past decade aims to decarbonize the energy sector by 2050, limiting the globally rising temperatures to within 1.5 degrees of pre-industrial levels. To meet the ambitious climate targets, energy intensity of the global economy will need to be drastically reduced and countries will have to substantially increase renewable energy in their energy mix.
Worldwide investments in efficient, low-carbon renewable energy technologies and systems will continue to be scaled up supported by enabling national policies. Accelerated transformation of the energy sector would require smart and flexible power systems, innovative business models as well as robust, forward-looking regulatory and policy frameworks.
This talk will highlight current state of the energy transition as well as recent developments and outlook at the international and local levels, including in aspects of future challenges, opportunities, enabling technologies and support policies.
