SYNOPSIS 1

CIDB Act 520 (Amendment of Fourth Schedule) Order 2021 has been enforced on 13 September 2021. This act covers scaffolding & falsework materials used in construction industry and the materials shall be complied with Construction Industry Standard CIS22:2021 (scaffolding) & CIS23:2021 (falsework). The manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, Professional Engineers for Temporary Works (PETW) and consultant engineers shall ensure the compliance of the Act 520, CIS22 & CIS23 for supply, design and use of scaffolding & falsework in construction.

Ir. Lee Kee Bau (Ir. KB Lee) is the Technical Director of Era Scaffold System Sdn. Bhd, a Malaysian company specifically dedicated in temporary works for construction such as scaffolding, falsework, formwork and self climbing platform system.

Ir. KB Lee has more than 25 years of experience specialising in temporary works for construction, which include scaffolding, falsework, formwork and self climbing platform system. Ir. KB Lee graduated in Civil and Structural Engineering and he is a Registrered Professional Engineer.

Ir. KB Lee is currently an active technical committee of Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) for CIS22 “Safe Use of Scaffolding in Construction” and CIS23 “Safe Use Falsework in Construction” and the Chairman for the technical committee of Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) for “Malaysia Standard for Steel Products including Scaffolding & Falsework” and the committee member for the working group of Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) for “Malaysia Standard for Falsework & Scaffolding”. He is the committee member of Civil & Structural Engineering Technical Division, the Institution of Engineer Malaysia’s (IEM).

Title : Falsework Design and Testing of Falsework Structures


SYNOPSIS 2

Proprietary falsework systems are used at almost every construction site in Malaysia. Workers erecting these systems may have little or no formal training and engineers are often relying on technical advice from suppliers for their design and safe use. The failures of falsework structures will have serious consequences and it is therefore essential that the “falsework designer” understands the basic design principles of falsework structures. Falsework design should include design checks for structural strength & stiffness of individual members and the overall stability of falsework structures.

The safe working loads and capacities for falsework structures depend on the “effective length” of the members. Test results for the proprietary falsework tower and components will provide a better understanding of the “effective length” of falsework structures.

Ir. Dr. Lim Boon Tiong is the Managing Director with Meinhardt Malaysia with more than 30 years of experience in the designs of civil and structural engineering and building works.  Dr. Lim has worked in Singapore, Taiwan, China and Malaysia, where he is a Registered Professional Engineer.  

Dr. Lim’s experience includes highrise building, road works, viaducts, geotechnical and earth slopes, drainage, sewerage and water supply work.  Ir. Dr. Lim Boon Tiong graduated with a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Glasgow
