Kuantan 188, which stands proud on the banks of Kuantan River, is the latest iconic landmark of Pahang’s first city, and also the tallest tower in East Coast Economic Region.  

The tower is 188 meters tall features with a 66-meter steel spire. The upper portion of the tower comprises a restaurant at observation deck, “sky-walk” at sky deck and 1 level of basement car park.

For tall tower, structural responses to wind action is one of the key issues to overcome in the design of the tower.  

Concrete is one of the most widely used construction material, the quality of the in-place concrete which may influenced by the workmanship and construction process on site. Therefore, Quality of concrete shall be checked “before concreting”, “during concreting” and “after concreting”. Quality control process implemented include trial mix, planning of testing of fresh and hardened concrete. Testing of hardened concrete include in-situ core tests compliment with non-destructive testing such as Ultra pulse velocity (UPV) and rebound hammer test.

Other challenges in the construction of tall Tower includes temperature control for concrete mass pour of thick raft, instrumentation and monitoring for wall / column shortening due to elastic, creep and shrinkage.



Speaker 1: Ir. Ong Chaow Chiun


Ir. Ong Chaow Chiun is the Executive Director with Meinhardt Malaysia with more than 20 years of experience.  

He graduated with a B.Eng degree in Civil Engineering from University College London and a MSc. in Construction Management & Engineering from Universiy of Leeds.

Ir. Ong Chaow Chiun has over 19 years experience in planning, structural design and implementation of a wide spectrum of building types ranging from tall buildings to purpose built facilities; and from new build projects to adaptive reuse / repurposing of old buildings. He has also worked on infrastructure projects such as riverbank protection work, water supply mains and diversion of existing major utilities in urban areas.

He was the lead C&S Designer and has led the overall design development and execution for large mixed commercial projects such as The Robertson KL, 9 Seputeh VIVO Residential Suites, 9 Seputeh Master Infrastructures, Sentral Suites KL Sentral, Menara Shell & Ascott Residence KL Sentral, CVSKL, Bukit Nanas Water Mains Bypass.


Speaker 2 : Ir. Dr. Lim Boon Tiong

Dr. Lim is the Managing Director with Meinhardt Malaysia with more than 30 years of experience in the designs of civil and structural engineering and building works.  

Dr. Lim has worked in Singapore, Taiwan, China and Malaysia, where he is a Registered Professional Engineer.  

Dr. Lim’s experience includes highrise building, road works, viaducts, geotechnical and earth slopes, drainage, sewerage and water supply work.  Ir. Dr. Lim Boon Tiong graduated with a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Glasgow.

Dr. Lim has led building works in Kuantan 188, Four Season Place, Petronas Tower 3, Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, University Technology Petronas’s Chancellor Hall and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.  

He also has participated in railway projects such as East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR), Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (KVMRT2), Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3) and Klang Valley Double Tracking Phase 2 (KVDT2).
