SYNOPSIS

Constructing & installing big size pipelines across major highways & rivers poses huge challenges in term of safety to pipeline as well as environment. There are many methods that can be used to install pipeline at crossing. For road/highway crossings the most common are Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), tunnelling & jacking and the recent one is called direct pipe. Whereas for waterway crossings there are also HDD method and push pull method. Each method comes with its own pros and cons and must be carefully studied prior to execution.

HDD has become more common due to the fact that it provides less disturbance to the site location as well as less impact to the environment. Previously in Malaysia HDD crossing for big size pipeline is limited to short length crossing i.e. less than 0.5km due to limitation of machinery that can exert huge load in pulling the pipeline string. Nowadays, more players has managed to penetrate the local market and bring in better technology for longer length and safer operation. This paper shares a few successful stories of big size pipelines HDD and their challenges.
