Palm oil milling had over 50 years in Malaysia. The industry evolves over those years from imported reliance of oversea technology to technology provider to the whole world currently. It may one day, being 100% locally develops technology. Malaysia even drops from number 1 producer to no 2 behind Indonesia, technical expertise from Malaysia being sought after to design and manage palm oil plantation and milling overseas. CPO prices had been high in 2020 even in the Covid 19 pandemic. As it a norm in this industry with the ups and downs of CPO prices. The industry continues to operate and sustain to ever changing policy, market demand and environmental challenges locally and abroad. Milling technology in palm oil mills mostly were based on research paper “Mongana report-1955” findings. The concept and process did not change much from the research paper. However, in the present, could be seen some innovative improvement and changes to some of the machinery in the mill from the years 1955. Innovative solution emerged all the way from main process toward waste or effluent treatment, downstream processes as well.

Horizontal digester initiated when I wanted to design a new palm oil mill in 2019 with 3 new challenges ie:
  i.   Lower broken kernel %
  ii.  Lower oil losses in presscake fibre
  iii. Operator free operation

The present operation, quality control specifications and maintenance in this particular station had been years stagnant and accepted by industry locally and abroad.

The 3 new criteria challenge had been thrown to local fabricator of downstream machine. The fabricator is known to produce high reliability machine with the operator free criteria.

Present issues and problems of the station ie: digester and press station being discussed to overcome or eliminate. The first R&D unit were born in the following year 2020. It is called “horizontal digester”.



Ir. Wan Wai Thong was graduated with a Bachelor in Engineering Hons.  Agriculture in 1993 from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He worked his way up with the required knowledge and skills in palm oil milling industries. He obtained his 2nd grade steam engineer certificate by DOSH in 1995 and 1st grade steam engineer certificate by DOSH in 1997. In 1996, he obtained his Diploma in Palm Oil Milling and Management offered by PORIM. He had worked in power plant for more than 6 years with experience in operation and maintenance of high pressure and temperature power plant, study and monitor boiler efficiency and related machineries. He furthers his engineering quest by obtaining Professional Engineer Certification by Board of Engineer Malaysia (BEM) in year 2011 and is a member of Institute of Engineer Malaysia (IEM). Engage as technical advisor by several palm oil mills and construct new mills. Involve in several biomass power plant projects planning. Highly interested in continue improvement and often take technical issues as challenge. Had filed 3 out of box game changer process and machine patterns in palm oil milling related industry in 2019 and 2020.
