SYNOPSIS

Sustainable procurement is about taking social and environmental factors into consideration along financial factors in making procurement decisions. It involves looking beyond the traditional economic limits and making decisions based on the life cost, the associated risks, measures of success and implications for society and the environment. Making decisions in this way requires setting procurement into the broader strategic context including value for money, performance management, corporate and community priorities.

The sustainable procurement process does not differ greatly from the traditional procurement process. It incorporates the first stage from planning to design. Follow by tendering and construction. Lastly project handover, close-out and occupancy. This talk will deal with the term green and sustainability used interchangeably, there is a difference between green and sustainable procurement. For “green” procurement (the middle-size box), common phases of the life cycle for the procurement are incorporated into the construction. In sustainable procurement (the bigger box), the numbers of variables and stages of the building life-cycle cost considered are even larger. Variable such as site selection, project planning and urban design, service quality, social and economic aspect and cultural and perceptual aspect is added.
