SYNOPSIS
Railway Engineering is a multi-faceted discipline involving a specialized group of engineers capable of dealing with the unique problems associated with the Railways. It deals with the design, construction and operation of all types of railway transport system namely the LRT, MRT, Tram, etc.
This talk is presented with a view to providing guidance to anyone wishing to gain more appreciation for what Railway Engineering is about. The speaker intends for the participants to develop a general understanding of the concepts involved.
The talk will cover the wide aspects of railway services that are being practiced in the industry, historical accounts of railways around the world, the design stages involved in a project, the various gauges adopted as well as the different type of rolling stock used on the railway systems.
SPEAKER
Ir. Dominic Sachathran has been involved in the railway industry for the past 14 years since graduating from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a B.E. (Civil) in 2006. He is a professional engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and a Corporate Member of IEM. Dominic specializes in alignment design for various rail classifications such as mass rapid, light rail, tram and heavy haul.
He started his career at Minconsult Sdn Bhd in 2006 as a Resident Engineer on the Electrified Double Tracking Project (Rawang to Ipoh). Dominic was later assigned as the alignment design lead for the 16 km LRT line extension from Kelana Jaya to Putra Heights. In 2010, he joined Sinclair Knight Mertz and was involved extensively in various railway projects in Australia. In 2014, he moved to SMEC Sdn Bhd where he completed the detailed design for a 200 km long freight railway line in Sarawak as well as a feasibility study for an integrated tram network within the central business district of Kuala Lumpur. Dominic joined Jacobs in 2017 and led the trackwork design for the design and build contract of MRT Line 2 (SSP to Putrajaya). In 2019, he was seconded to Abu Dhabi, UAE as the Design Package Manager (Freight Facilities) for the Etihad Rail Project. Dominic is currently involved in track rehabilitation design for the Klang Valley Double Tracking Project from Simpang Port Klang to Port Klang South.
