SYNOPSIS

With the rapid development utilizing good ground, the development had encroached into problematic soils.  As various type of ground condition having their own soil characteristic, understand of soil mechanics and deliver of solutions became an inevitable approach.  Apart from the convention structural solutions, whereby loads are transfer to the harder soil stratum, Ground Improvement technologies had since emerged and adopted to modify the characteristic of soil by means of consolidations, reinforcement, and rearrangement of soil particles.  With these available techniques, the modification unable to soil to sustain a higher imposed load, increased shear resistance and reduced post construction excessive settlement. The presentation will deliver an overview on Ground Improvement techniques and the application of techniques on various type of ground conditions.


SPEAKER’S BIODATA

Ir. Sin Peng Tean graduated and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from University of South Alabama, USA in year 1997. He started his career with a geotechnical consultancy firm in Mobile, Alabama, USA.  When he returned to Malaysia, he has since involved in Ground Improvement works for more than 20years of experience in Southeast Asia region.  His Ground Improvement experience included airports, reclamation, highways, oil and gas, railways, power plant and residential development.  He is currently the Chairman of Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division (GETD) of IEM and served GETD since 2013.  He is the Secretary General and Treasurer of Association of Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia (AGSSEA).
