SYNOPSIS

Kuala Lumpur’s second MRT network connecting the northern suburb of Sungai Buloh to the southern administrative capital of Putrajaya is a massive undertaking.

The central underground portion of the MRT alignment cuts right through the heart of Kuala Lumpur where the famed Petronas Twin Towers stand and traverses through an assortment of complex geologies including the notoriously challenging and sinkhole-prone Kuala Lumpur karstic limestone formation. Twelve, 2-storey high, tunnel boring machines will be constructing the tunnels at any one time.

Hot on the heels of successfully completing the first underground MRT of Kuala Lumpur, Ng Hau Wei, as Head of the Tunnelling unit of MMC-Gamuda, the contractor for the whole of the underground works, and the co-inventor of the Variable Density TBM, unfolds the challenges that await him on KL’s second MRT line.

He has a deep seated fear of over relying on the competency and consistency of the skills of human TBM operators for the safe delivery of the tunnelling works on the project. Betting instead on AI and automation, he sheds light on how he revolutionises tunnelling practices to help alleviate the burden of the task at hand, putting his team at the forefront of innovation in the industry, and his vision for the future.

Mr. Ng Hau Wei has 20 years of Civil Contractor experience in large infrastructure project and over 15 years of 60 kilometres tunnel construction experience covering shield and unshielded mechanized tunnelling methods.
His work includes mega construction of the dual-purpose SMART Tunnel in Kuala Lumpur, the interstate Electrified Double Track Project of Peninsular Malaysia and KVMRT, the country’s 1st metro rail and at present time pushing to complete its 2nd line.
His experience covers dam, rail and road tunnel construction in various geologies, including extreme karst limestone.

Ng Hau Wei is currently the Deputy Project Director of KVMRT underground project and the lead in driving the Tunnelling Research Programme. His most notable achievements are joint development of the world’s first Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VD TBM) and the making of the first Autonomous Tunnel Boring Machine (A-TBM).

Further Details

I.     Hand sanitiser will be available at the entrance of IEM Building.
       Members must sanitise their hands every time they enter IEM Building.
II.    Temperature Screening will be done at the registration counter at Ground Floor.
       Members who have a body temperature of 37.5 ° Celsius or show any symptoms
       will not be allowed to enter the Lecture Hall.
III.  Members are highly encouraged to wear face masks at their own costs throughout
       the duration in the IEM Building.
IV.   Scanning of CPD will be done at the registration counter at Ground Floor.
       Non-member to produce their MyKAD for scanning and recording purpose.  
V.    Social distancing must be maintained at all times.
       All Members must maintain a distance of 1 meter from each other.
VI.   All Members to be seated at least 1m apart from each other.
VII.  Members strictly advised to follow the entry and exit guides.
