SYNOPSIS

Submarine remains as one of the gold standards in system engineering where various fields of engineering mash up to ‘work in synergy to collectively perform a useful function’. The evolution of submarine technologies has come a long way since the Turtle, where submarine can now dive to the deepest part of the ocean from a humble few feet at the beginning. This session will try to unravel this complex creation by exploring the technologies in 5 key areas – hull/structure, power generation, underwater sensors, habitability and combat capability - that enable submarines to continue their arrogance as one of the most fearsome and dangerous weapons in the world.

Malaysia has joined the submarine community in 2009 when her first submarine was commissioned into Royal Malaysian Navy service.

The presentation intends to serve as an introduction to submarine engineering and technologies, which most of the technologies have significant impact to the high-tech industry, such as batteries and steel.
