SYNOPSIS

The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) was incorporated in 1996 to strategically drive the Malaysian Government on legislation, policies and standards for ICT and multimedia operations as well as to oversee the development of the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor (now MSC Malaysia). MSC Malaysia became the platform to nurture the growth of Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the ICT industry whilst attracting participation from global ICT companies to invest and develop cutting-edge digital and creative solutions in Malaysia. Within MDeC, there are 3 main clusters namely InfoTech, Creative Multimedia Content and Shared Services & Outsourcing (SSO).

SSO is one of the biggest shifts in corporate thinking this millennium. Malaysia has a vibrant ICT and world-class services industry which is evident by the AT Kearney Offshore Location Attractiveness Index that ranks Malaysia as the world’s 3rd most attractive SSO location for the past 8 years in a row.

The current perception of jobs in the SSO industry is that they are centered on low-value Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and IT Outsourcing (ITO) activities such as Call Centers and IT Helpdesks. However, the industry has grown and evolved into one that moves up the value chain offering high-value Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) activities such as Software Research & Design, Investment Research & Analytics, Project Management and Engineering Design & Services.

The presentation aims to talk about how Engineering Services is one of the top KPO activities and it is an approved MSC Malaysia activity, allowing eligibility for the MSC Malaysia Status. There will also be topics on the Benefits & Incentives and how Malaysia can ensure Engineering Services will be a potential area of growth for the SSO industry over the coming years.
