Synopsis 1 - Malaysia Iconic Lankmarks : Engineers Made Them Reality  - Ir. Sharifah Azlina will share her experience and challenges as part of the team behind the design of several iconic infrastructure built around the nation. She will deliver on the role of engineers from the various scope and procurement approaches, emphasizing on the demands and challenges arising and obstacles overcome. She will also impart her experience in lending her expertise in some of the prominent projects in the international landscape.

Synopsis 2 - Sewage Treatment Works - Sewage treatment works involves the control and mitigation of pollution loading originated from wastewater discharges from the domestic activities in protecting water resources, environment and public health. The rapid development and population growth increase the need to have a proper sewage treatment, and technological growth in sewage treatment works plays an important role for the treatment improvement and effectiveness. This presentation will focus on the application and challenges in adopting new technology of MBR system for sewage treatment work in Malaysia.

Synopsis 3 - Flood Mitigation Work  - Flood mitigation involves the management and control of flood water.  This presentation will focus on the flood mitigation work and challenges during construction of the On-Site Detention Pond for Sg Rasau Toll Plaza.

Synopsis 4 - Digital Globalisation for Engineers  - Digital transformation era is sweeping the globe, moving fast and furious. Engineers with the right mix of skills are needed to take the development forward. The biggest impact of IoT is having that instant access to data, a new era of connected things and mobile technology. IoT does not create the need a lot of new engineering disciplinary areas but brings together a number of disciplines that currently exist under the one umbrella. What engineers can do to equip themselves to take maximum advantage of the IoT? While there are many technical challenges that need to be resolved to take full advantage of the potential of these technologies?

Synopsis 5 - Consideration of Acoustics Aspects in Construction Works -  Quality of life and health of construction operators and workers are significantly influenced by the acoustic environment problems in construction sites. The effects are related not only to both physical and psychological health but also chronic stress, which could lead to several health problems, including heart problems and diabetes. She will discuss the acoustic environment due to construction activities, the risk and prevalence of hearing impairment among construction workers, the consideration of the acoustic environment using new predictive tool based on stochastic modelling.

Synopsis 6 - Kinect Sports Games for Fundamental Engineering Concepts Understanding and Learning Motivation  - Virtual reality (VR) is an artificial environment created using software to simulate the real world. The impact of virtual reality games available in the market on Malaysian students’ education is being explored. Kinect sports games effect on students’ understanding of a fundamental engineering concept and learning motivation are investigated. Although the technology is available, there are still many challenges in VR application and implementation in education, which will be discussed.

Synopsis 7 - In the last decade solar energy has been identified as one of the main alternative sources of energy with great potential to satisfy the world’s energy needs. Unfortunately, the high capital cost of photovoltaic (PV) systems has prevented the widespread adoption of this kind of technology in developing countries, where up to 36.5% of the cost is due to the PV material. To address this issue, one of the solutions suggested by several researchers is to incorporate optical concentrators in the panel design. This allow the system to utilize only a fraction of the PV material but at the same time produce similar electrical output from a non-concentrating system. This talk will present the current development of solar concentrator as an alternative to the traditional solar PV panel
