XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human and machine-readable. The W3C's XML 1.0 Specification and several other related specifications—all of them free open standards—define XML

When XML was introduced in the early 90s, there were a lot of hope and expectations of what this technology will deliver. Embedding intelligence in a document has many potential usages.

Today, XML is one of the backbone technology used on the internet especially for information transfer. The standards for Semantic Web, Resource Description Framework (RDF), Simple Knowledge Organising System (SKOS), Topic Maps and so on are all based on XML technology. Although standards development has slowed, work on XML technology and applications are still ongoing.

This talk will cover the basics of the XML document and related XML standards like XML Schema, XSLT, XPath, XQuery and the XML document object model (DOM) using the tutorial provided by W3Schools. This will be followed by demonstrations of how XML technology is used in different ways in a real life application.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

KK Aw (MIEM), graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malaya in 1973. His early career was in the tin mining industry where he worked in design and project engineering and management. Since 1986, he has been in software development and has undertaken applications for rail track design, energy cable manufacturer, digital mapping, legal opinions, safety audit, plant genetic resource conservation, water information repository and Integrated Water Resource Management. He is currently working on an end-of-career project to make the Auditor-General's Report more accessible, integrated and usable with the social aim of promoting accountability in the public sector.

His software application, MultiCentrix (formerly called InfoMap) was the PIKOM-Computimes IT product (Software) for the year 1998. MultiCentrix embraces the XML technology.
