SYNOPSIS
Essential Oil Processing Plant
MARDI has developed and manufactures a wide range of essential oils of selected plants and commercial value such as Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Kesum (Polygonum minus), Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L), Lemon Grass meal (Cymbopogon citratus) , Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix) and Lime (Citrus microcarpa).
MARDI new focus is R & D and production of wood-based essential oils of sweet cinnamon (Cinnamomon zeylanicum), which can be obtained from the leaves, twigs and bark of cinnamon.
Stingless Honey Bee Production
Malaysia is known as one of the mega diverse country and one of the indicators is the high number of pollinator species. Forty five (45) species of stingless bee was recorded in Malaysia and most of it inhIbit the virgin forest. In 2012, MARDI had launched stingless beekeeping technology and since then it became very popular to public. The special characteristic and high quality of stingless bee honey which had been promoted as Malaysia first ‘superfood’ by the Agriculture Minister had increase public interest even more.
The Kelulut mini farm showcase the uniqness of this insect’s nest architecture and behaviour and visitor can learn some basic of stingless bee keeping and if they want to get a souvenior of genuine stingless bee honey, they could buy it at the shop there itself.
NOTE: The visit is strictly limited to 30 participants registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
