SYNOPSIS OF THE TALK

Identifying the ground structures and properties prior to construction is the utmost importance for any large-scale construction, and collection of subsurface information using various technologies and its visualization would lead to the success of project. Prof. Matsui presents the techniques of ground information gathering and visualization based on his experiences on large off-shore reclamation and tunnelling under large overburden, and followings are the outlines of his presentation:

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Prof. Dr Tamotsu Matsui, graduated in 1963 with B. Civil Eng. from Faculty of Engineering Osaka University.
After the graduation, he has been engaged in research and teaching in Geotechnical Engineering Division at the Osaka University. In 1969 he became an Assistant Professor, and then became an Associate Professor in 1976. He has received his Doctor of Engineering degree at the Osaka University in 1975. Through April 1978 to March 1979, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1984 he was promoted to a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Osaka University where he served until his retirement in March, 2004. Upon the retirement he was awarded an Emeritus Professor status of the Osaka University, and he moved to Fukui University of Technology as a Professor serving there until March, 2009. Also he worked as a Visiting Professor at Ritsumeikan University during between April, 2009 and March, 2012. He is presently the chairman of the board of directors of the Calamity Science Institute since July, 2011.

He was the President of the Japan Geotechnical Society -Kansai Chapter from 1998 to 1999, and the President of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers -Kansai Chapter from 2001 to 2002. Also, he was the president of the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineering from 2006 to 2007.　He was the Vice-Chairperson of 16th ICSMGE 2005 which was held in Osaka. Also, he had played an important role on the remediation of structure foundations in the 1995 Kobe Earthquake.

His research interest covers a wide area of geotechnical engineering from soft soils to weak rocks, such as mechanical behaviour of soft soils, numerical simulation of soft ground, pile foundations including passive piles, soil reinforcements in slope stability, ground improvements, ground prospecting.
