SYNOPSIS

The capability to develop vehicles involves a complex network of processes and resources which evolves over a long period of time.

This capability has emerged through the individual and coordinated investments of each nation in ASEAN since the 70s. An overview of this vehicle engineering accomplishment in ASEAN is described through examples in the development of aircrafts and cars from the author’s own engineering experience. From scientific analysis, process innovation, business strategy or regulation developments, this is a good examples of an emergent system.

Engineered to International Standards and sold in Global Markets, the region’s own market has adopted as well as developed its own regulation and requirements to complete the cycle of engineering and is now exploring future requirements with the global community.  Boldly exploring novel solutions such as electric and autonomous vehicles with potential to address more complex societal needs; some ASEAN cities have even setup test beds to enable engineers from different disciplines and industries to collaborate in the development of these future vehicles & systems and possibly creating a totally new mode of transport.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Mr Lee Chong Jin is currently the General Manager of R&D in Autoliv Hirotako Malaysia, working on Autonomous Vehicle Systems Development to avoid collisions, following a decade of work in the Development in Passenger Protection Systems in cars after a collision. This technology (testing and computational methodologies) has helped raise the crashworthiness of Malaysian cars and in ASEAN. Through collaboration with the ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) and other Research Institutions, solutions are continuosly studied to reduce injury and accidents.

He joined Singapore Technologies Aerospace after completing his Bachelors of Engineering (Mechanical) Degree from the National University of Singapore in 1989.  Specializing in the Design of the Aircraft Structures, he has worked on novel solutions for aircrafts and helicopters. After joining UMW Corporation in 1995 to build an electric version of the Proton Wira; he has been involved since in the rapidly growing Automotive industry though numerous vehicle, system and component development projects in the region.

Chong Jin is passionate about Engineering Education and serves as the current Chairman of the University of Nottingham Mechanical Engineering Industry Advisory Board and VP of the Nanyang Technological University Malaysia Alumni Association. He is interested in increasing the understanding of the thinking process in Engineering and its pedagogy to meet the chalenges of Complex and Emergent Systems.
