SYNOPSYS

The EN 81 series standard was established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) about 30 years ago and is being used by majority of countries worldwide. With new technological evolution and increased awareness of safety the EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 are no longer considered state of the art. This prompted CEN to release two new safety standards for the construction of lifts and for the testing of lift components in 2014. Both new standards apply for passenger and goods passenger lifts. EN 81-20 defines the technical requirements for the construction of lifts while EN 81-50 defines design rules, calculations and tests of lift components. The new standards will be effective as of 1st September 2017. The existing standards EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 will remain in force during this transition period and will be withdrawn once the new standards become effective. In order to keep the Malaysian lift industry abreast with global standards, the Working Group on Lifts & Escalators at SIRIM is working towards updating the Malaysian Standard by adapting the new standards. Jabatan Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan requires compliance to the latest standards for design approval. Therefore it is recommended for all projects that most likely will be handed over after 31st August 2017 to plan according to EN 81-20/50.
