SYNOPSIS

Climate change, a global concern is driven by Greenhouse Gas [GHG] emissions. A significant portion of these are associated with the generation and use of electricity. In Malaysia generation is dominated by coal, which has a large foot print. The talk will examine the challenges in reducing GHG emissions both in the choice fuels and equipment. It will also examine how electricity wastages can be minimized in the transmission and end-use in all sectors. It will end by exploring what active roles engineers can play.


Speaker’s Biodata

GURMIT SINGH K.S. - Chairman, Centre for Environment, Technology and Development, Malaysia [CETDEM] Mr. Gurmit Singh is an environmentalist, social activist and engineer. He is the Chairman of CETDEM.  Prior to becoming Chairman, he was the Centre’s founder Executive Director from June 1985 to December 2006. He was appointed as Director of CETDEM’s think tank SUDI in Aug. 2011. He is also an Adviser of the Environmental Protection Society, Malaysia, [after having served as founder President from 1974 to 1994]  and till 15 Sept. 2012 was Regional Coordinator of Climate Action Network, Southeast Asia (CANSEA) for 3 terms. For his dedicated work, the Malaysian Government awarded Gurmit the distinguished Langkawi Award in 1993 and the Sustainable Consumer Award in 2008.  UN Malaysia gave him its Environmental Sustainability Award in 2013 while MBPJ presented him its Green Leadership award towards the end of the year. In 2015 the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation gave him the Green Catalyst Award. He also garnered an Honorary M.Sc. from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2000.  Gurmit holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Malaya [1970]. He has been a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia since 1974.
