SYNOPSIS

Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) started gaining popularity since ’80. The advances in microprocessor and telecommunication technologies over the last 30 years has brought about a paradigm shift for IED. It has been transformed from a standalone single-function IED to a complex multi-function IED of a SCADA system. With the coming of Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data, IED will be transformed into an IoT. The potential of these transformed IEDs will be limitless, changing the way on how we use IED for electrical power protection, monitoring and control.

The talk covers

o  What is an IED?
o  What is IoT and Big Data?
o  Embedded system and its various essential components?
o  From standalone system to connected system
o  The effect of IoT and Big Data on the future of IED
o  Some possible applications
