SYNOPSIS

Development of new power plant is essential and important in ensuring the growing electricity demand in a country is always being met. In some cases, the construction of such new power plant is to replace the aging plant that is no longer reliable and efficient.

During the past decade, we have witnessed a large number of power plant projects being developed and built in the ASEAN countries, primarily due to the rapid increase in the electricity demand as a result of both economic and population growth.

The first part of this talk will introduce the various power generation technologies that are available globally, together with their advantages and disadvantages. The second part of the talk will focus on the framework of implementing independent power generating plant, and the project agreements that are necessary in ensuring a successful implementation of such projects.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Fam Yew Hin is a Registered Professional Engineer with BEM and a Corporate Member of IEM. Graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Sheffield, Ir. Fam has during the past 17 years served in the National Utility, Independent Power Producers as well as with the Regulator. He has also obtained a Diploma in Financial Management, and received the award of world best result from ACCA.  

Ir. Fam has been actively involved in IEM activities, he is the chairman of the Membership Drive and Promotion sub-committee, immediate past Chairman and the current Advisor to the Mechanical Engineering Technical Division (IEM).
