SYNOPSIS
Fats, Oil & Grease (FOG) are the main pollutants to our river systems. The main source of FOG is from the food outlets. DBKL stipulated the installation of Grease Trap at all food outlets effective 1st January 2014, those who failed to comply will have their license revoked or not renewed. Reported on the 5th Jan 2016 by Star Metro that 10 popular food outlets in the city showed that despite installing the grease traps, the drains are still clogged, stagnant with gunk accumulated from food waste, detergent, oil, grease, lard and chemical used to clean and prepare food. There is a need for Engineers to understand the parameters when selecting the grease trap size. Maintenance of the grease trap is equally important if we are to reduce the FOG entering the rivers.
