BACKGROUND

A photovoltaic power station, also known as a solar farm, is a large-scale photovoltaic system (PV system) designed for the supply of merchant power into the electricity grid. They are differentiated from most building-mounted and other decentralised solar power applications because they supply power at the utility level, rather than to a local user or users. In Malaysia 67% of the 270MW of renewable energy generated is from solar photovoltaic.
Gading Kencana Sdn Bhd has successfully commissioned a 8-MW solar farm on a 6.86 hectar land in Bemban, Melaka with an investment cost of  RM 86-million. The solar farm has a total output of 10,120 MWh annually. It is enough to power some 1,800 local households. The electricity produced is being purchased by  Tenaga Nasional Bhd at 80 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme managed by Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA) and the Energy Commission. The photovoltaic modules are supplied by Chinese photovoltaics (PV) maker Yingli Green Energy Holding Co.
