SYNOPSIS
In the event of a fire incident inside a premises, compartmentation is a key to protection life and property by way of delaying the spread of fire and smoke so that Bomba can arrive to put out the fire. Openings like doors are inevitable in any premises and during a fire mode, these openings are vulnerable to fire spread and smoke drifting to other areas both causing fire and smoke damage often result in injury or even death among the occupants.
Engineers are guided by the UBBL 1984 and the various schedules relating to Passive Fire Protection installations and in this respect, roller shutters and fire doors in particular fire rated types played an important role during a fire incident in delay the fire spread within the premises. This study tour would enlighten the Engineers in terms of the concept, selecting the suitable type and design of the complete system. Both the Roller Shutters and Fire Door (metal type) are in compliance to the relevant Malaysian Standards. There are the maintenance aspects which need to be considered as these shutters/doors are expected to last for years. During the installation stage, there is need to ensure that the correct specified shutters/doors are installed and tested. Often the Bomba officer would also be required to conduct their verification.
