SYNOPSIS
Cement, a binder, has been widely used in construction industry since 200 years ago. It is undeniable that cement is a common building material for buildings, civil and infra projects. In this paper, the topics presented include cement making processes, starting from clinker manufacturing. The various Cement Standards will be mentioned with emphasis on BS EN 197-1:2011. The Standards and properties of supplementary cementitious materials such as Fly Ash, Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag and Silica Fume will be discussed. Carbon emission of Ordinary Portland Cement, Portland Fly Ash Cement and Portland Composite Cement, will be compared. The Environmental consideration of these supplementary cementitious materials will be discussed also. Can cement products be classified as green in today’s trend of buildings and township going green? This will be discussed in the presentation. Green cement product certification will be discussed together with its contribution to Green Building certification.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ms Wong Ai Ming graduated from Monash University, Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Hons). She lectured for many years in the Tunku Abdul Rahman College, in the Engineering Department, taught subjects such as Properties of Materials and prepared the Engineering students for the UK external examination. She held the position of a Senior Lecturer prior to joining Lafarge Malayan Cement in 1994.
Ms Wong is the Construction Specialist of Lafarge Malaysia Bhd. She had been Manager, Technical prior to present post. She holds various responsibilities, including providing technical support to customers and also to promote Lafarge’s blended cement products and concrete products to Specifiers, Contractors and Developers. She has given presentations on the usage of blended cement in forums such as Malbex and World Congress 2008 in Singapore, NRMCA Concrete Convention, as well as to Jabatan Kerja Raya and Consultants. In this aspect of her work, she has worked with Specifiers and Consultants in successfully specifying and using Portland Fly Ash Cement for durability properties in marine environment, power plants, sewerage treatment plants, dams, airports and thick structures.
Ms Wong is a task force member of the Singapore Green Building Council. As a member of the task force, she has been working with the team to draw up the criteria and rating tool for cement certification. In addition, she contributes to the preparation of Sirim Eco Labelling scheme for cement. At present, she is a committee member of IEM C&S Technical Division.
