Synopsis

This talk will report on (a) the Malaysian delegate’s experience from the 4th International Young Geotechnical Conference in Alexandria, Egypt, and (b) the Malaysian delegate’s paper published in the same Conference of which the abstract is as follows.
In practice, engineering design such geotechnical risks are mitigated in design standards in codified design. Some examples are presented. Recent techniques such as the qualitative or quantitative risk assessment method; termed the “Risk Approach”, have gained acceptance as a useful tool in managing geotechnical risks. In Malaysia it is more commonly used as a slope management and project management tool.
This is now commonly adopted to be used in managing risk in design and construction of geotechnical works. It is a comparative tool, which can be applied in conjunction with geotechnical engineering design tools. For example, it has been applied in planning an Observational Method for naturally unstable slopes and dewatering works. Its use is also relevant in the value engineering process and project-wide risk evaluation. Actual practice case examples from infrastructure projects will be presented to demonstrate the different concepts in these risk management applications.

BIODATA

Tan Ek Khai graduated in civil engineering from the University of New South Wales, Sydney in 2002 and is a practising professional engineer in Malaysia. He has co-authored several technical papers and publications. He has won a certificate of appreciation at the 6th Asian Young Geotechnical Engineer’s Conference in 2008.
He has been a key design team member in engineering design and management; for large scale infrastructure projects locally and internationally in highways, airport and railway. He is currently an Engineering Manager in the Design and Technical Division of Gamuda Engineering Sdn Bhd for a major urban metro project. He was previously a Geotechnical Engineer with an engineering consulting firm, Zaidun Leeng Sdn Bhd.
He was a member of the IEM Drafting Committee for the Local Malaysian Annex to the Eurocode 7 which is now published. Being active in learned society activities, he is a Corresponding Member of the Students’ and Young Members Presidential Group of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
