Synopsis
A green highway can be defined as a roadway design which is based on a relatively new concept of roadway design that integrates transportation functionality and ecological requirements. An environmental approach is used throughout the planning, design, and construction stages. A green highway will give benefit to not only the transportation infrastructure but also the ecosystem, urban growth, public health, and surrounding communities. Awareness of the highway users and stakeholders is essential in order to ensure the equilibrium between development and sustainability is maintained. When built to the standards of the concept, a green highway produces invaluable benefits to the environment. A green highway needs more consideration from all parties concerned. The government as a policy maker will provide the rules and regulation to be practiced by the concession companies and highway users. The need for promoting sustainability and green highway construction require a green highway assessment system. Therefore, the Malaysia Green Highway Index manual is designed as a performance baseline standard in order to measure the level of greenness for current or new highways in Malaysia. This manual explain several fundamental elements of green highway development that are suitable for the Malaysia condition. As a result many parties in the highway industry will obtain the benefits of developing sustainable green roads, pathways, and expressways.
