INTRODUCTION
A news report was published in The Star Online on 29 July 2011 pertaining to the shortage of engineers in the country. Taking cue from the report, IEM conducted a survey internally amongst members serving in IEM Committees to obtain feedback on the validity of the report.
Resulting from the survey, IEM noted that many comments centred on the shortage of “quality” engineers rather than the reported “shortage of engineers”. In view that the number of engineers serving in our Council and Technical Divisions is not sufficiently large to represent the engineering population, IEM decided that a forum should be arranged to seek input from all sectors involved with engineering to ascertain whether there is, in fact, a shortage of engineers or was there a shortage of “quality” engineers.
IEM would therefore like to invite you to participate in this forum so that we can hear your views which would enable us to identify the problem and thereafter suggest possible solutions for the benefit of the nation and the profession.
